The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has commenced the 2025 edition of its Unity Cup, aimed at promoting peace, unity, and youth development through grassroots football.
The week-long tourney organized by the Federation of Youths Soccer Clubs (FEYSOC) runs from July 6 to 12. It is being hosted by Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area for Under-18 boys and girls teams in the 18 local government areas (LGAs) of the state.
Speaking at the opening ceremony held at Idogbo Secondary School, NULGE State President, Dr. Scot Aigbovia, described the Unity Cup as a platform to engage and empower young people through sports.
He praised the Executive Chairman of Ikpoba-Okha, Rt. Hon. Obosa Jolly, for his dedication to youth development, noting that his visionary leadership influenced the choice of Ikpoba-Okha as host for this year’s tournament.
In his remarks, Rt. Hon. Jolly expressed delight at the council’s hosting role and lauded NULGE for initiating the competition, which he said would foster unity among local governments and build a more responsible, engaged younger generation.
The ceremonial kick-off was performed by Dr. Scot Aigbovia and Rt. Hon. Jolly to declare the tournament open.
The opening match saw Oredo LGA defeat Egor LGA 1–0 in an intense and exciting contest.
The event drew large crowds, including local government officials, community leaders, and football enthusiasts, who gathered to witness the colourful ceremony and spirited match.
The finals of the tournament are scheduled to hold on Saturday.
