The Super Falcons of Nigeria were on Monday night named the Women’s National Team of the Year at the 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards in Marrakech, Morocco.

The Super Falcons bested their South African counterparts, Banyana Banyana, and Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses, who were contenders for the prestigious award.

At the awards ceremony in Morocco, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Ibrahim Gusau, accepted the award on behalf of the team and dedicated it to Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, in recognition of her continued support for women’s football in the country.

The Falcons made history by qualifying for the Olympics for the first time in 16 years, representing Africa at the Paris 2024 Games.

However, they were eliminated at the group stage after losing all their matches, a stark contrast to their impressive performance at the 2023 World Cup, where they reached the Round of 16.

In the men’s category, Ivory Coast’s Elephants claimed the National Team of the Year award, edging out Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
