Former Chelsea player and Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo, has ruled out a possible return to play in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
Omeruo revealed his decision during a live X (formerly Twitter) Space session, co-hosted with fellow Nigerian internationals Wilfred Ndidi and Asisat Oshoala, along with several Nigerian journalists.
Explaining his reasons for not returning to the NPFL, Kenneth Omeruo mentioned the absence of a top-flight club in his hometown of Abuja but also expressed a strong interest in scouting and developing new talent within the league.
“I don’t think I will come back to play in the NPFL. I grew up in Abuja and they don’t have a club playing in the topflight. And right now, I can’t go back to Akure. I don’t see myself going back to the Nigerian league to play but I’m someone who likes scouting good players,” he said.
Speaking on the quality within the league, he recalled a time when an NPFL streaming app allowed him to share game footage with his agent and others.
“There was a time when the league had an app where we could stream games from everywhere and back then I shared it (the link) with my agent and other people because I knew the quality we had in that league,” he explained.
Although the former Chelsea player ruled out playing in Nigeria’s League, the presence of prominent veterans internationals like Ahmed Musa, Shehu Abdullahi and Brown Ideye in the NPFL could still inspire other stars to follow suit.
