The Edo State Football Association (Edo FA) is organizing an under-15 football tournament in honour of Super Eagles defender, Benjamin Tanimu.
Coming in a matter of weeks, the football tournament among under-15 football clubs in Edo State will be held across the three senatorial districts of the state.
Speaking to the media in Benin City at the weekend, Chairman, Edo FA, Fred Newton Erhunmwunse, stated that Tanimu, a former Eagles winger and Bendel Insurance FC defence stalwart who cut his teeth playing grassroots football on the streets of Benin City, has decided to give back to the society where he was discovered.
Erhunmwunse disclosed that the former Paragon Sports Academy (Delight) youngster, who is impressed with the development of football in the state since the coming of the present Edo FA Board in 2023, is very eager to help engage the youths of Edo State with the football tourney.
“I want to inform us that in the next few days we shall begin the process of another big event in Edo State for our youth clubs, this time for under-15. Former Bendel Insurance strong man Benjamin Tanimu has donated a trophy to Edo FA to engage under-15 boys,” Erhunmwense said.
“The event will take place across the three senatorial districts of the state.
“Benjamin came through the grassroots and he was a huge success here in Benin City with Bendel Insurance. He is impressed with our programmes and wants to contribute to what we have done since 2023.
“We are grateful to him and we promise to deliver as usual,” he said.
He said a lot awaits the winners – trophies, medals, Top Scorer award, Most Valuable Player, Best Midfielder, Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender, and other tournament souvenirs.
Benjamin Tanimu, ex-Ihefu SC of Tanzania star and Crawley Town FC of England defender, becomes the second Super Eagles’ player after Osayi Samuel to donate to grassroots football in the state with the Edo FA as organisers.
Meanwhile, the Edo FA boss has asked the various youth teams to begin preparation for the big tournament as registration will commence soonest.
