The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced plans for an additional qualifying championship to address the shortage of teams in the final field for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024).

Currently, 16 teams have secured spots, including the three co-host nations and 13 others who progressed through the qualifying series. However, the wild card previously granted to Rwanda appears to have been rescinded, as the country is no longer listed among the participants. Algeria, a late entrant, may also have been excluded from the competition.

Despite these developments, CAF said that “two nations must still be confirmed through a series of qualifier matches ahead of the August 2025 tournament“.

With these adjustments, the final field for CHAN 2024 will expand to 18 teams, and the tournament’s official draw will proceed as scheduled.
