Former Super Eagles defender Ifeanyi Udeze has expressed strong disapproval of the Nigeria Football Federation’s decision to appoint Eric Chelle as the head coach of the Super Eagles.

Udeze criticized the move, claiming that Chelle’s credentials do not match those of his predecessor, Augustine Eguavoen.

Speaking on Brila FM’s “No Holds Barred”, Udeze did not hold back in questioning the basis of Chelle’s appointment.

“The most annoying thing is that Augustine Eguavoen, who was our interim coach, has a better CV than this Eric Chelle,” Udeze said. “On what grounds was Chelle employed?”

Udeze went further, alleging that Chelle’s decision to take the job was driven by self-interest rather than a commitment to the team’s success.

“He took the job to enhance his CV. He doesn’t care whether we qualify for the World Cup or not. That’s the only reason he accepted the job,” Udeze added.

Eric Chelle, a 47-year-old Malian coach, was recently appointed by the NFF to manage the Super Eagles for the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. His appointment followed a period of turbulence for the national team’s coaching staff. Chelle replaces Augustine Eguavoen, who had been serving as caretaker manager after the NFF dismissed Finidi George last year.

However, Chelle’s track record has drawn criticism, particularly as he was recently dismissed as Mali’s head coach after a string of poor performances in the same 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The NFF’s decision has sparked debate among fans and analysts alike, with Udeze being one of the most vocal critics. As the Super Eagles prepare for their remaining World Cup qualifiers, the pressure will be on Chelle to prove his worth and lead the team to success amidst widespread scepticism.
