Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has directed that Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, be reopened immediately.
The IBB University was shut down indefinitely on 25 June 2025 on governor’s order following security breaches that claimed the life of a student and sparked widespread unrest within the university community.
The governor’s decision to reopen the university followed a thorough review of security measures and infrastructural upgrades at the institution, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abubakar Usman, said in a statement issued on Friday in Minna, the state capital.
Usman said the state government has implemented a robust security architecture to ensure the safety of students, staff, and the broader university community. He reaffirmed Governor Bago’s commitment to the welfare of the university’s stakeholders and pledged continued government support for the institution.
While praising the collaborative efforts of security agencies, university authorities, and community leaders in addressing the issues that led to the school’s closure, Usman urged students and staff to adhere strictly to the new security protocols and cooperate with university management to ensure a seamless resumption.
