The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has distanced itself from a viral press release claiming that it had cancelled the English Language paperwritten on Wednesday, May 28, 2028 in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

WAEC said the purported press release was fake, and the information completely untrue, as it neither emanated from the examination body nor represented its intentions.

A press release dated Friday, May 30, 2025 had claimed that “the English Language paper written on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, in the ongoing WASSCE for school candidates, 2025 has been cancelled, and a new date for the conduct of the examination will be announced soon”.

But WAEC Nigeria, in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Head of Public Affairs Department, Moyosola Adesina, said neither the paper in question nor any other paper had been cancelled.

The council said though it had yet to ascertain the source of the false information, it was certain it was the handiwork of mischief-makers “who are bent on bringing the council into disrepute and causing confusion and panic among candidates who sat the examination”.

“The council would therefore like to use this opportunity to inform the general public and all stakeholders that official information from WAEC is disseminated only through our verified social media handles and accredited media platforms across the country,” the statement said.

“We also categorically state that all press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office. The public should disregard any information not disseminated through these official platforms.

“Once again, we appreciate all stakeholders for the confidence reposed in us over the past 73 years of conducting credible examinations. We remain committed to continually seeking innovative ways to provide quality service to the Nigerian child,” it said.
