Ousted Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa storms Assembly, reclaims office

The political crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly for several weeks took a new turn on Thursday as the ousted Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, stormed the Assembly complex and forcefully reclaimed the Speaker’s office.

Mudashiru Obasa, who was accompanied by heavily armed security officials, entered the Speaker’s office around 12:00 pm and announced that he has once again assumed the position of Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

“I’ve resumed and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa said.

Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, while he was away in the United States during the House recess. His removal followed an impeachment by an overwhelming majority of Lagos lawmakers. His forceful entry, Thursday, marks his first appearance at the Assembly since his removal.

Obasa’s forceful entry into the Lagos State House of Assembly complex comes after police authorities had earlier in the day withdrawn security details attached to the House and the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, who has been unable to assume full control of the parliament since she was elected as Obasa’s replacement. The withdrawal of security details had raised tensions within the legislative complex.

This is also coming even as a lawsuit Obasa filed against Speaker Meranda and the Lagos State House of Assembly challenging his removal in court is yet to be heard.
