The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday elected the deputy speaker and member representing Apapa Constituency 1, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, as Speaker.

Meranda was promptly sworn in, becoming the first ever female speaker of the House.

The House also elected the deputy chief whip, Hon. Fatai Mojeed, as the deputy speaker to succeed Meranda.

Meranda’s election followed on the heels of the impeachment and removal from office of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, earlier.

Obasa was removed by 32 members of the House following his impeachment for allegations of multiple statutory and financial misdeeds levelled against him. .

The removal came days after it was reported that N43.5 billion was withdrawn from the Assembly’s account for back-up vehicles for lawmakers, as well as other controversial activities.

Sources say Obasa was in Atlanta, USA, when he was impeached.

Obasa, 52, was first elected Speaker on June 8, 2015, resuming office alongside former one-term governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.
