The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced a re-strategised approach to combating kidnapping across the country, following a series of successful operations in recent weeks.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police force reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering internal security and ensuring the safety of all Nigerians.
The Nigeria Police Force said one of the notable operations took place on December 31, 2024, when police operatives in Kwande Local Government Area, Benue State, executed a daring rescue mission. Acting on a tip-off about the abduction of Tor Gajir by gunmen, officers from the Vandiekya Divisional Headquarters tracked a suspect, Desmond Ahar, who led them to the kidnappers’ hideout in Adikpo.
The police were engaged in a gunfight at the scene, which resulted in the neutralisation of three kidnappers, while others fled with injuries. The victim was rescued unharmed, and operatives recovered two AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and live ammunition. The statement said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects as at the time of reporting.
In a similar operation in Nasarawa State on December 28, the police force said it discovered an abandoned vehicle on the Keffi-Kaduna Highway. Following the trail, officers rescued two hostages unharmed. The statement also said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the kidnappers.
The statement further added that on January 7, 2025, police operatives in Bayelsa State detained one Usman Mohammed, who was en route to Rivers State. A thorough search of his vehicle revealed an AK-47 rifle, a Type 09 AR, and a large quantity of ammunition. Mohammed was arrested while the police have continued investigations.
The statement said the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the operatives for their bravery and dedication, urging them to continue their efforts in tackling kidnapping and other crimes. He also encouraged Nigerians to remain vigilant and support the police in ensuring public safety and security.
