The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has assured Nigerians of its preparedness to tackle any potential health threat posed by the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV).

In a statement released on Tuesday, the agency confirmed that it is working closely with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to strengthen surveillance and preventive measures across the country.

Director-General of the NCDC, Dr Jide Idris, addressed public concerns, emphasising that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has not declared HMPV a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). He also clarified that the National Influenza Sentinel Surveillance (NISS) system has not detected any unusual rise in respiratory infections in Nigeria.

Dr Idris highlighted simple but effective preventive measures, including frequent handwashing, wearing face masks in crowded areas, and staying home when feeling unwell. He stressed that these practices can help reduce the spread of respiratory infections.

Although no cases of HMPV have been reported in Nigeria, the NCDC is not taking any chances. Surveillance at sentinel sites across the country has been intensified to detect any potential threats early.

Globally, concerns about HMPV have been growing after China’s National Health Commission reported a rise in respiratory illnesses, particularly among children. While the WHO acknowledged these developments, it has not provided specific data on HMPV.

Dr Idris also joined calls for greater international cooperation and information sharing to tackle the risks posed by emerging health threats.

The NCDC reassured Nigerians of its commitment to safeguarding public health, promising to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing any potential challenges.
