The National Population Commission (NPC) has successfully registered and issued birth certificates to over 10 million children across Nigeria.
The Commission’s Chairman, Alhaji Nasir Isa Kwarra, highlighted this achievement during an event at the Asokoro General Hospital in Abuja, where the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, presented the birth certificate to the “Baby of the Year”.
The Chairman, represented by the Federal Commissioner from Katsina State, Bala Banya, emphasized the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every child born in Nigeria is registered and provided with a birth certificate.
He noted that the digitization of the registration process, along with collaboration with the Primary Health Care Agency, ensures that children born in any location can now be seamlessly registered. He also urged parents and guardians to take advantage of the free registration services.
The Director General of the National Population Commission, Dr. Telson Ojegun, disclosed plans to establish over 4,000 registration centres nationwide to bring services closer to communities. He further highlighted the Commission’s use of advanced technology to create unique and tamper-proof identities for all registered children.
Dr. Ojegun expressed gratitude to the First Lady, represented by the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, for her role in presenting the birth certificate to the “Baby of the Year”. He also encouraged Nigerians to report deaths to the Commission to maintain accurate and comprehensive records.
