New year, new goals

As the year 2024, which seemed like an endless journey, finally comes to a close, many are left with mixed feelings about the past; reflecting on regrets, losses, gains, and personal growth, as well as unmet goals. A respondent noted, “The dance of many people in this year’s crossover service would tell you their experiences.” Many others are filled with so much excitement to take on the new year.

As usual, many have begun to outline their plans and preparations for the new year, ready to take the bull by the horns. According to one respondent, the year 2025 is going to be a serious one. In her words, “Na ‘Kanra for Kanra’ this year as whatever aura people bring is what will determine our relationship with them, there’s no time for play.”

With new year resolutions trending, some are ambitiously planning to purchase five cars and build ten houses by year’s end, while others are focused on how to ‘Japa’ before the first quarter of the year concludes. However, due to discouragement from unfinished projects and the current state of the country, some others have decided to adopt a more laid-back approach, choosing to navigate life as it comes.

The concept of New Year’s resolutions extends beyond merely jotting down extravagant wishes on paper. Indeed, as the saying goes, “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.” Instead, it involves setting specific and realistic goals for the year and developing actionable plans to achieve them. While these plans may not manifest overnight, consistent dedication, discipline, and regular evaluation of progress can lead to significant growth and the eventual accomplishment of these objectives.

Budgeting and self-discipline are also crucial factors to be put in place when planning for the new year. Nigerians, in particular, must resist peer pressure that encourages lavish spending. As a pastor remarked, “You spend N200,000 at a restaurant to keep up with millionaires and then at night they sleep while you can’t sleep.”

Once the right elements are in place, resolutions combined with dedication would definitely lead to celebration. As we wrap up the year 2024 with resolutions for the new year, it’s time to pick up our pens and start making plans and strategies for their achievement as 2025 might just be the year you finally acquire that car you’ve always desired.
