The values of a region are inextricably tied to everything in that region, fashion included. Nigerian fashion has been upended, warped, and highly diluted in an attempt to tilt towards the west. This has led to an erosion of traditional feminine values. Fashion is a diverse landscape, but our focus will be on clothing. Hop on a ride with me as we explore this topic even further.

To begin with, every region has values that are strongly upheld; these values rub off on how things are done in the region. The traditional Nigerian values are ones that perfume women with modesty and poise. Feminine values have always been strongly upheld in Nigeria until their fierce erosion by “my body, my choice” began.

It must be understood that people have choices, and fashion can be an expression of one’s identity. But this can be done without completely obliterating our traditional values. Back in the day, Nigerian women wore clothes that covered their bodies properly; however, this has changed drastically.

Nigeria, as well as Africa, is not like the Western part of the world; the female demographic revere their femininity by covering up their lady bits. In addition, those lady bits were dubbed “private parts” for a reason: they should never be made public.

Today, women are seen wearing inappropriate pieces of clothing to places like churches, schools, etc. Extremely short, bikini-like, and transparent outfits are the preferred choices. Comfort should be considered first when picking an outfit, but this is not guaranteed with these types of outfits seeing how most women tug at their outfits and adjust themselves at intervals. People should be able to slay and also enjoy maximum comfort; the two can coexist.

To sum this up, it’s important to note that fashion is ever-changing, and people want to keep up with the times. However, Nigerian women can hop on modern fashion trends while also conserving traditional values. We’re Nigerians and should continue to uphold our values, with modesty at the core of them. In addition, the next time you are picking an outfit, remember that “slaying” and being covered up aren’t mutually exclusive.
