President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his congratulations to the newly elected leaders of the Nigeria chapter of the International Press Institute (IPI), urging them to prioritise the promotion of responsible journalism and the strengthening of democratic values in the country.
The recently concluded IPI Nigeria elections saw the Editor-in-Chief of Premium Times, Musikilu Mojeed, re-elected as President of IPI Nigeria, Ahmed Shekarau of Media Trust Limited as Secretary, and Fidelis Mbah of Al Jazeera Television as Deputy President. Other newly elected officers include Rafatu Salami of Voice of Nigeria as Treasurer, Yomi Adeboye of The Herald as Assistant Secretary, and Tobi Soniyi of Arise News as Legal Adviser.
Tinubu, in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, called on the new IPI leadership to actively collaborate with the government in expanding public access to information and fostering a culture of accountability and transparency.
“The new IPI Nigeria leadership has an important responsibility to ensure responsible journalism that advances our national interest, as enshrined in the constitution,” Tinubu said.
The President also emphasised the need for collaboration between the media and his administration to enhance the free flow of information and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
The President’s call comes at a time when the role of the media in shaping public opinion and influencing policy is under increased scrutiny, with expectations for news organisations to balance freedom of expression with societal responsibility.
