A former National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for South-East, Nze Fidelis Ozichukwu Chukwu, has emerged as the new President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
Chukwu, who hails from Imo State, will serve out the remaining 27 days in the four-year tenure of Imo State began by Prof George Ibiozor and continued by Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. The tenure ends January 10, 2025.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo announced this in a communique issued by its Secretary-General, Amb. Okey Emuchay, at the end of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Imeobi and General Assembly meeting held in Enugu on Saturday, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Iwuanyanwu was elected Ohanaeze President-General following the death of Prof. George Obiozor in 2022. He was sworn in on April 30, 2023 but unfortunately died on July 25, 2024. Iwuanyanwu’s death necessitated the emergence of another lead to complete the term.
“In line with the doctrine of necessity, the Imo Chapter of Ohanaeze, led by Mr C J Ihemedu, presented Chukwu to the Imeobi Ohanaeze to exhaust the balance of four-year tenure allotted to Imo,” Emuchay said.
He said the motion for Chukwu’s adoption was moved by Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, Chairman, Imo Council of Elders, and seconded by Chief Simon Okeke.
“In line with the doctrine of necessity, the Imeobi adopted the nomination of Chukwu as President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and the motion was unanimously adopted through a voice vote by the Imeobi Ohanaeze Ndigbo,” Emuchay said.
“The State Presidents of Ohanaeze Ndigbo of Abia, Anambra, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Rivers expressed delight over the nomination of Chukwu as the new President-General until January 10, 2025,” he said.
He further stated that Chukwu was sworn in as the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide by National Legal Adviser, Mr Joseph Ojobu, and the Assistant Legal Adviser, Dr Peter Aneke.
He said the Southeast Governors’ Forum, represented by Gov. Peter Mbah, charged the new President-General to ensure that the forthcoming Ohanaeze election would be both transparent and credible.
