In a significant stride towards development, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, the Executive Governor of Edo State, presented the proposed N605 billion budget for 2025 yesterday, December 10, 2024, to the State House of Assembly in Benin City. This ambitious budget allocates N223 billion to recurrent expenditure and a substantial N381 billion to capital projects, reflecting a commendable 25% increase from the previous year’s budget. It marks a pivotal shift in fiscal strategy, as the allocation dedicates 37% to recurrent expenses and emphasizes an impressive 63% on capital investments. This financial plan is tailored to address crucial sectors such as road infrastructure, education, healthcare, security, and agriculture—areas that are vital for Edo’s growth and prosperity.

Despite the promise and intention encapsulated in this budget, a minor slip during the presentation seems to have overshadowed the occasion, propelling critics into a frenzy. Rather than engaging with the meaningful content of the budget or recognizing the optimistic trajectory of governance under Okpebholo, many have chosen to dwell on this small misstep. This reaction underscores a tendency for some individuals to lose sight of the broader vision and the significant changes already underway in the state.

Edo’s citizens have, for far too long, endured empty rhetoric and unfulfilled promises under the immediate administration. They voted for Senator Okpebholo not for his ability to deliver grand speeches, but for his proven track record and commitment to tangible results. It is less than a month since he assumed office, and the early signs of his administration indicate a promising future for Edo State. The voters placed their trust in a builder and reformer; their priority rests not on impeccable speeches, but on the fruition of developmental agendas and reforms.

It is noteworthy that many critics tend to magnify insignificant errors, allowing personal bias to distort the narrative surrounding genuine progress. Yet, since taking the helm, Governor Okpebholo has shown unwavering focus, resilience, and strong leadership. His capacity to withstand distractions and remain committed to the work at hand proves he is unfazed by detractors seeking to undermine his governance through trivialities.

Constructive criticism has its place in any thriving democracy. A true leader acknowledges their faults and uses them as stepping stones for improvement, as demonstrated by Governor Okpebholo during a recent state media tour. Instead of fostering division through hasty judgment, why not recognize the considerable measures he has already implemented as part of his mandate?

As Edo State moves forward, it is worth reflecting on the actions already taken since the new administration began:

– The remodeling of public schools, ensuring a better learning environment for Edo’s children.

– The commencement of critical road projects, including the Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi Road, aimed at bolstering connectivity and economic activity.

– The initiation of a book distribution program and a commitment to rebuilding schools to enhance educational outcomes.

– Significant reforms in healthcare, as evidenced by the identification and rectification of construction flaws at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital.

– A renewed focus on e-governance to improve administrative efficiency and citizen engagement.

– The dissolution of exploitative market unions and a commitment to worker welfare, exemplified by the introduction of a 13th-month salary for civil servants.

– A steadfast approach to addressing youth concerns through job opportunities, a crackdown on cultism, and resolution of traditional disputes.

These commendable actions shouldn’t be overshadowed by the noise of senseless critics who have emerged primarily in response to a minor slip-up—a situation that calls into question the authenticity of their critiques. It seems misplaced energy to focus on a fleeting mistake when the pressing needs of the state and the call for collaboration are paramount.

Edo’s trajectory towards progress can only be achieved through constructive partnership. Instead of succumbing to the allure of sensationalism, it is imperative to rally behind a leader willing to acknowledge mistakes and who, more importantly, works tirelessly to fulfill the promises made to the people.

As Edo State embarks on this journey toward progress under Governor Okpebholo’s administration, it is essential to concentrate on constructive dialogue and collective efforts in bringing forth the desired change. Let us set aside distractions and strive together for a brighter and more prosperous Edo, recognizing that no one is perfect and that growth is an evolving process. Together, we can build a state that thrives on collaboration, innovation, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of its people.

A new Edo is rising!
