The police in Zamfara State have accused the Lakurawa terrorist group of being behind the recent explosions that rocked two villages in Dansadau District, Maru Local Government Area of the state.
Daily Trust reports that the Zamfara State Police Commissioner, Muhammad Dalijan, made the claim in a telephone conversation with the newspaper’s correspondent on Wednesday.
“Yes, there was an explosion along Dansadau road this morning and it was a bomb planted under a bridge. The motorist stepped on it and and it exploded killing one person and injured three others,” Dalijan told Daily Trust.
“Preliminary investigations indicated that it was remnant of Lakurawa terrorists that were being pressed by the soldiers to leave Nigeria that planted the explosive. The terrorists are now trying to find their way to Birnin-Gwari forest en-route Zamfara state. They are facing serious pressure from the Nigerian security to leave the country.
“By the grace of God, we will get them and deal with them decisively. All we need from the public is useful information about the movement of these terrorists,” he said.
Wednesday’s explosion at Yar Tasha village was the second along the route in four days, the first having occurred on Sunday at Mai-Gungume village along the same Dansadau road, killing a commercial driver.
A Lake Chad Basin counterterrorism and insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, said in a post on his X handle earlier that Wednesday’s incident, the second bomb explosion on the Gusau-Dansadau route, signalled a dangerous shift in the tactics employed by bandits operating in Zamfara.
“Traditionally known for their activities such as kidnapping, cattle rustling, and armed attacks, the use of explosives introduces a new level of insecurity in the region,” Makama said.
